Florianópolis: A Gay Traveler's Paradise in Brazil
While Florianópolis is a relatively small city by Brazilian standards, its stunning natural beauty draws visitors from around the globe. Forget the bustling downtown - most travelers come here to immerse themselves in the island's scores of beaches, lush forests, towering dunes, and picturesque lakes.
The Rise of a Gay-Friendly Destination
For years, Florianópolis has been a popular getaway for gay travelers from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
But recently, it's become a must-visit destination for gay tourists from Europe, Australia, and North America. Just a short flight south of São Paulo, it's incredibly accessible. The crown jewel of the gay scene here? Praia Mole, the island's celebrated gay beach.
Praia Mole: Sun, Sand, and Sociability
This stunning beach stretches for nearly a kilometer along the east coast of the island.
At the far end, nestled among impressive boulders, you'll find Bar do Deca, the iconic gay bar. While the nightclubs are located in the city, on sunny days, Praia Mole is where the action is.
Beyond the Beach: Exploring the Island
Florianópolis offers much more than just beaches.
During our visit, we explored other parts of the island, including Sambaqui, a charming neighborhood on the west side. From our restaurant in Sambaqui, we enjoyed breathtaking views of Florianópolis. We also ventured north to the newer and more upscale Jurerê Internacional.
Nightlife and Community: More Than Just Bars
While Bar do Deca is a daytime hotspot, Florianópolis boasts a vibrant gay nightlife.
Here are a few notable options:
- Jivago Social Club: A popular spot for dancing and socializing.
- Rapáshh Cruising Bar: For those seeking a more intimate experience.
- Conca Club: Another popular spot for dancing and nightlife.
- Jonas Pub: A more relaxed option for drinks and conversation.
- Santa Club Lagoa Nightclub: A large nightclub with themed nights.
- Madalena Bar: A bar with a relaxed atmosphere, great for socializing.
